Jetlag is horrific, especially when you arrive into a country and have so much to do - the last thing you want to be doing is napping in the afternoon, whilst you desperately struggle to stay awake during lunch. I have been here many times. Unluckily for me, I had just finished work on the Friday, flew on Saturday and had to start a new job on Sunday - jetlag was not an option for me. I always follow these tips wherever I go now, and swear by them:
First things first, try and bit savvy when booking your flight - avoid arriving to your final destination at night time, as you'll just to slump down and sleep. If you are going to a destination with a big time difference, try and find flights which will stop halfway - not only is it cheaper, but the break up of flights and smaller time zones is much better for your body.
We all know that plane food is hardly hearty and filling (unless you have the joys of going First Class), regardless of the time of day, I always ensure I have a really big and filling meal before I board to allow me to feel full and nap if I need to.
Make sure you drink plenty whilst on the flight - the air conditioning and altitude is harsh enough to dry out a camel, so make sure you are always topping up your fluids and taking some water on the plane with you.
As soon as you get on board; change your watch to the local time at your final destination. If it's night time there, force yourself to go to sleep - if not, then stay up.
Make sure you are often leaving your seat and doing a lap up and down the aisle on the flight - this will help with blood flow and also make you feel less tired if you should be staying awake.
Once you arrive in your destination; take a walk and get moving. This is probably the last thing you want to do after a long haul flight, but it's been scientifically proving that when you fly you disengage yourself from the earth's static charge. So by spending 30 minutes walking bare foot in the grass, sea or sand or even get some fresh air; it really helps to reconnect back to earth.
Take a warm bath or hot shower once you get to your hotel, not only is it refreshing, but you have just spent a long time in a hot, cramped plane.
Avoid too much alcohol whilst flying. I love having a glass of prosecco to toast the holidays before I fly, but too much alcohol can cause fatigue and dehydration, whichis worse for beating jetlag. The same rule also applies for coffee.
Avoid taking sleeping tablets, it will force you into a deep sleep and do nothing to help the jet lag; you'll just arrive in your final destination all fuzzy eyed.
Trying getting into the habit of having 3 meals a day as soon as you arrive - it will help get your body into a routine. And if that means munching on cereals as soon as you arrive, then so be it.
And finally, as exciting as it is to party hard and explore the sights when you first arrive, try getting about 8-10 hours sleep early into your vacation to re-balance the body.
That's all for now - hope these tips have helped!
